    Emotional voice processing: Investigating the role of genetic variation in the serotonin transporter across development

    The ability to effectively respond to emotional information carried in the human voice plays a pivotal role for social interactions. We examined how genetic factors, especially the serotonin transporter genetic variation (5-HTTLPR), affect the neurodynamics of emotional voice processing in infants and adults by measuring event-related brain potentials (ERPs). The results revealed that infants distinguish between emotions during an early perceptual processing stage, whereas adults recognize and evaluate the meaning of emotions during later semantic processing stages. While infants do discriminate between emotions, only in adults was genetic variation associated with neurophysiological differences in how positive and negative emotions are processed in the brain. This suggests that genetic association with neurocognitive functions emerges during development, emphasizing the role that variation in serotonin plays in the maturation of brain systems involved in emotion recognition

    Unveiling the double-well energy landscape in a ferroelectric layer

    The properties of ferroelectric materials, which were discovered almost a century ago¹ , have led to a huge range of applications, such as digital information storage² , pyroelectric energy conversion³ and neuromorphic computing⁴⁻⁵ . Recently, it was shown that ferroelectrics can have negative capacitance⁶⁻¹¹, which could improve the energy efficiency of conventional electronics beyond fundamental limits¹²⁻¹⁴. In Landau–Ginzburg–Devonshire theory¹⁵⁻¹⁷, this negative capacitance is directly related to the doublewell shape of the ferroelectric polarization–energy landscape, which was thought for more than 70 years to be inaccessible to experiments¹⁸. Here we report electrical measurements of the intrinsic double-well energy landscape in a thin layer of ferroelectric Hf₀.₅Zr₀.₅O₂. To achieve this, we integrated the ferroelectric into a heterostructure capacitor with a second dielectric layer to prevent immediate screening of polarization charges during switching. These results show that negative capacitance has its origin in the energy barrier in a double-well landscape. Furthermore, we demonstrate that ferroelectric negative capacitance can be fast and hysteresis-free, which is important for prospective applications¹⁹. In addition, the Hf₀.₅Zr₀.₅O₂ used in this work is currently the most industry-relevant ferroelectric material, because both HfO₂ and ZrO₂ thin films are already used in everyday electronics²⁰. This could lead to fast adoption of negative capacitance effects in future products with markedly improved energy efficiency

    Calculating and visualizing the density of states for simple quantum mechanical systems

    We present a graphical approach to understanding the degeneracy, density of states, and cumulative state number for some simple quantum systems. By taking advantage of basic computing operations, we define a straightforward procedure for determining the relationship between discrete quantum energy levels and the corresponding density of states and cumulative level number. The density of states for a particle in a rigid box of various shapes and dimensions is examined and graphed. It is seen that the dimension of the box, rather than its shape, is the most important feature. In addition, we look at the density of states for a multi-particle system of identical bosons built on the single-particle spectra of those boxes. A simple model is used to explain how the N-particle density of states arises from the single particle system it is based on

    Analysis of Performance Instabilities of Hafnia-Based Ferroelectrics Using Modulus Spectroscopy and Thermally Stimulated Depolarization Currents

    The discovery of the ferroelectric orthorhombic phase in doped hafnia films has sparked immense research efforts. Presently, a major obstacle for hafnia's use in high-endurance memory applications like nonvolatile random-access memories is its unstable ferroelectric response during field cycling. Different mechanisms are proposed to explain this instability including field-induced phase change, electron trapping, and oxygen vacancy diffusion. However, none of these is able to fully explain the complete behavior and interdependencies of these phenomena. Up to now, no complete root cause for fatigue, wake-up, and imprint effects is presented. In this study, the first evidence for the presence of singly and doubly positively charged oxygen vacancies in hafnia–zirconia films using thermally stimulated currents and impedance spectroscopy is presented. Moreover, it is shown that interaction of these defects with electrons at the interfaces to the electrodes may cause the observed instability of the ferroelectric performance

    Sensitivity and specificity of antibodies against HPV16 E6 and other early proteins for the detection of HPV16-driven oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma

    To determine the sensitivity and specificity of HPV16 serology as diagnostic marker for HPV16-driven oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC), 214 HNSCC patients from Germany and Italy with fresh-frozen tumor tissues and sera collected before treatment were included in this study. Hundred and twenty cancer cases were from the oropharynx and 94 were from head and neck cancer regions outside the oropharynx (45 oral cavity, 12 hypopharynx and 35 larynx). Serum antibodies to early (E1, E2, E6 and E7) and late (L1) HPV16 proteins were analyzed by multiplex serology and were compared to tumor HPV RNA status as the gold standard. A tumor was defined as HPV-driven in the presence of HPV16 DNA and HPV16 transformation-specific RNA transcript patterns (E6*I, E1∧E4 and E1C). Of 120 OPSCC, 66 (55%) were HPV16-driven. HPV16 E6 seropositivity was the best predictor of HPV16-driven OPSCC (diagnostic accuracy 97% [95%CI 92–99%], Cohen's kappa 0.93 [95%CI 0.8–1.0]). Of the 66 HPV-driven OPSCC, 63 were HPV16 E6 seropositive, compared to only one (1.8%) among the 54 non-HPV-driven OPSCC, resulting in a sensitivity of 96% (95%CI 88–98) and a specificity of 98% (95%CI 90–100). Of 94 HNSCC outside the oropharynx, six (6%) were HPV16-driven. In these patients, HPV16 E6 seropositivity had lower sensitivity (50%, 95%CI 19–81), but was highly specific (100%, 95%CI 96–100). In conclusion, HPV16 E6 seropositivity appears to be a highly reliable diagnostic marker for HPV16-driven OPSCC with very high sensitivity and specificity, but might be less sensitive for HPV16-driven HNSCC outside the oropharynx

    La presente tesis desarrolla el plan estratégico del sector bancario peruano, sector que se considera importante debido a que soporta el desarrollo económico del país y que posee un gran potencial de crecimiento por las características favorables que vive el Perú actualmente. La metodología empleada tuvo como base una revisión bibliográfica así como publicaciones de actualidad y entrevistas con autoridades del sector que nos dieron su punto de vista, visión y expectativas del sector bancario peruano según su trayectoria y experiencia en él. Para llevar a cabo el plan estratégico se realiza un análisis externo bajo los lineamientos (a) políticos, (b) económicos, (c) sociales, (d) tecnológicos y (e) ecológicos que permite tener una visión clara del entorno sobre el cual se desarrolla el sector en estudio. A su vez, se toma en cuenta a los países referentes y sus indicadores. De igual manera, se lleva a cabo un análisis interno que permite visualizar cada área de importancia dentro del sector, para ello se tiene en cuenta las áreas de (a) administración, (b) marketing, (c) operaciones, (d) finanzas, (e) recursos humanos, (f) sistemas de información y (g) tecnología. Las estrategias que se plantean luego del análisis son de (a) penetración en el mercado, (b) desarrollo de mercados, (c) desarrollo de productos e (d) integración vertical hacia delante y, permitirán llevar al sector bancario peruano en el año 2022 a ser un sector rentable, mantener un nivel de riesgo controlado y apoyar la bancarización aportando además al crecimiento del país. Asimismo, lo llevará a ser transparente, eficiente y socialmente responsable. Se plantean objetivos de largo plazo y aunados a ellos, de corto plazo, junto a indicadores para cada uno que ayudarán a monitorear el alcance de la visión planteada.Tesi

    Maternal depression is associated with DNA methylation changes in cord blood T lymphocytes and adult hippocampi

    Depression affects 10-15% of pregnant women and has been associated with preterm delivery and later developmental, behavioural and learning disabilities. We tested the hypothesis that maternal depression is associated with DNA methylation alterations in maternal T lymphocytes, neonatal cord blood T lymphocytes and adult offspring hippocampi. Genome-wide DNA methylation of CD3+ T lymphocytes isolated from 38 antepartum maternal and 44 neonatal cord blood samples were analyzed using Illumina Methylation 450 K microarrays. Previously obtained methylation data sets using methylated DNA immunoprecipitation and array-hybridization of 62 postmortem hippocampal samples of adult males were re-analyzed to test associations with history of maternal depression. We found 145 (false discovery rate (FDR) q<0.05) and 2520 (FDR q<0.1) differentially methylated CG-sites in cord blood T lymphocytes of neonates from the maternal depression group as compared with the control group. However, no significant DNA methylation differences were detected in the antepartum maternal T lymphocytes of our preliminary data set. We also detected 294 differentially methylated probes (FDR q<0.1) in hippocampal samples associated with history of maternal depression. We observed a significant overlap (P=0.002) of 33 genes with changes in DNA methylation in T lymphocytes of neonates and brains of adult offspring. Many of these genes are involved in immune system functions. Our results show that DNA methylation changes in offspring associated with maternal depression are detectable at birth in the immune system and persist to adulthood in the brain. This is consistent with the hypothesis that system-wide epigenetic changes are involved in life-long responses to maternal depression in the offspring. © 2015 Translational Psychiatry
